Elizabeth and Martin were married at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and lived in the Strasburg area for a few years. They then moved to a farm just north of Quarryville, Martic Township and remained in Lancaster County for the rest of their lives.

Elizabeth's father was "Swamp" John Groff and her mother was Anna Herr. Both the Groff and Herr families were Mennonites who left Switzerland due to their persecution by the government there. Elizabeth's great grandfather Rev. Hans Herr arrived about 1710 and the Groff family about the same time. All three families emigrated to Lancaster County where they intermarried and many became prominent citizens of the area. Most of the emigrants remained loyal to the Mennonite church.
