William was born in Nairn, Nairnshire, Scotland to James Calder and Janet MacIntosh. He emigrated to Canada in 1832 with his father, aunt and some siblings. It was his father's wish to establish William in a farm, however, William died in the Cholera epidemic of 1834. He was James Calder's only surviving son and never had a chance to marry or have children.
