James was born in Nairn, Nairnshire, Scotland to William Calder and Isabel Lamb. He married Janet MacIntosh 18 Dec 1807 in Nairn, Nairnshire. Janet died in Scotland. James, his sister Isabella and some of his children emigrated to Canada in 1832, settling in Dumfries, Waterloo, Ontario. James was a tailor. In 1841 he married Margeret (Wyllie) Guthrie, widow of David Guthrie and sister to Ayr's first postmaster, Robert Wyllie. They had no children.
