Elwin and his brother Chester Austin came to Clark County some time before 1900 with their maternal grandparents Josiah Towle and Eliza Wood Towle. Their parents were Fred Austin and Eliza Towle. According to family oral history, their mother Eliza had passed away and the grandparents did not consider Fred Austin a fit father capable of raising his sons, so they basically kidnapped Elwin and Chester and moved to Clark County.
