Actor, Director. He was born in Tirlemont (Tienen), Belgium. After training for the priesthood, he studied acting in Paris at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique in 1919, accepting roles on stage and screen. Establishing a career as a stage actor, he was a member of the Comédie-Française in Paris from 1921, until 1942, after which he concentrated on cinematic roles in both France and the United States, acting in more that 80 films. He retuned to the Conservatoire National as a teacher of acting from 1958 to 1967. From 1938 to 1955 he directed plays at the Comédie-Française, the Théâtre Antoine, and the Théâtre Michel. His U.S. film roles include "The Big Gamble," "The Longest Day," and "Freud: The Secret Passion." His notable French roles include "La Bete Humaine", "Les Miserables" (1958,1982), "Papa, maman, ma femme et moi," and "The Trial" ("Le procèss"), directed by Orson Welles. He died in Villerville, France.
