John Ulrich Amstutz was born 28 Nov 1849 in Switzerland, to Johannes Ulrich Amstutz and Katharine Oberli. Ulrich immigrated with his parents and arrived 8 Feb 1854 in New York. His maternal grandparents arrived with them. It appears that his father had immigrated earlier and purchased farm land in Adams County, Indiana. The family settled briefly in Sugar Creek, Wayne County, Ohio. This was a very common first settling place for immigrant Mennonite families. His family moved to Adams County, Indiana and his mother, Katherine Oberli, died giving birth to her 8th child 1858. His father remarried and had an additional 9 children with his third wife, before dying in 1869 in Adams County, Indiana. Ulrich does not appear with his father in the census in 1860. In 1870 he was living with John J. Amstutz in Wayne County, Ohio and working as a farm hand. It is unknown whether John J Amstutz was a relative.
He died at Toledo State Hospital on 01 Feb 1897, and was buried in the hospital cemetery on 04 Feb 1897.
