Jesse S. Hutton

Jesse S. Hutton was born near Waterloo, Iowa, July 23, 1858. He was one of a family of five sons and three daughters born to Wesley W. and Margaret Buck Hutton. He was united in marriage to Annie L. Farnsworth at Denver, Iowa, September 10, 1884 and to this union were born four children, Guy W. and Mrs. Mary Gregg of Egan, Mrs. Margaret Byrd of Watertown, and Mrs. Manda Chestnut of Farmington, Calif.

In 1899 he sold their farm in Blackhawk County, Iowa and purchased a larger farm 2¼ miles northwest of Egan, arriving in South Dakota on the special migrant train to Moody County, Feb. 22, 1900. He continued farming for three years after the death of his wife, November 17, 1931. He has lived in South Dakota continuously for a little over 51 years with the exception of five or six months spent with his daughter in California. He has been living at the Fairview Home in Flandreau for two years prior to his death which occurred Tuesday evening, August 7, 1951.

Surviving him after a long and useful life are his four children, 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. One grandson Harold H. Justus lost his life, a member of the Air Corps in World War II. There are also two brothers living, W. E. Hutton of Egan and Chas. W. Hutton of Waterloo. Burial was made in the family lot in Hillside Cemetery Sunday afternoon, August 12, 1951. The Orvedahl Funeral service and the Rev. Cecil L. Kilmer officiating.
Pall bearers, all grandsons, were Myron Herrick, Jess Holste, Vernon Julson, Ralph Justus, Ray Justus and Ralph Jones.

Relatives attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Byrd of Waterloo [This should be Mr. and Mrs J. W. Byrd of Watertown.], Mrs. Wm. Chestnut of Farmington, Calif., Mr. And Mrs. Jesse Holste of Stockton, Calif., Mr. And Mrs. Vernon Julson of Garretson, Mr. and Mrs. Ray W. Justus and family of Watertown, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Justus of Wahpeton, N. Dak., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hutton of Sioux Falls, Mr. and Mrs. George Wilson of Great Falls, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Relf of Clear Lake and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kasdorf of Estelline.
