Old Veteran Passes Away

John C. Rathman Died Last Friday
Evening With Heart Trouble
Death was Very Sudden

One by one the old veterans of the Civil War are passing away, and as this time passes the number is decreasing rapidly, and the time is not far distant when "Taps" will signal the last one home.

The last one in this community to answer the final summons was John C. Rathman, who passed away at his home in this city Friday, May 5th, 1911, about 10 o'clock in the evening, after a very brief illness, heart trouble being the immediate cause of death, although he had not been in the best of health for some time in fact he had not been a well man since he had an operation for stomach trouble about four years ago.

John Christoph Rathman was born December 2nd, 1832, near Schneidermehl, Germany, hence at the time of his death was 78 years 5 months and 2 days of age. He came to the United States when he as about 22 years old. He served three years in the Civil war under Sherman and Thomas, being a member of Co. A. 16th U.S. infantry, and was given an honorable discharge in 1865, at the close of the war.

On the 24th of November, 1867, he was married to Mary Jane Webb, with whom he lived until the time of her death in September, 1895. This union resulted in the birth of five children, three sons and two daughters.

On the 19th of June, 1898, he was married to Mrs. Ida M. Farnsworth. The birth of one son, Donald, now ten years old, was the result of this union.

Mr. Rathman came to South Dakota from Iowa in the year 1886 with his family and located on a homestead three miles west of Egan, and has lived there and in Egan continuously since that time. He was a member of the German Lutheran Church.

He leaves to mourn his loss a loving wife, two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Hall and Mrs. E.M. Seiler of Jamestown, N.D.; four sons, Frank and Charles, also of Jamestown, William, Denver, Colo., and Donald of Egan, and a brother, Charles F. Rathman, of Flandreau, besides other relatives, and a host of friends all of whom sympathize with the bereaved relatives in this their hour of trial and affliction.

Funeral services were held in the M.E. Church Tuesday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. N.A. Christensen, pastor of the church, after which the remains were interred in Hillside Cemetery south of town. The children who all reside at a distance were able to be in attendance at the funeral.
