Former University of Iowa gymnast and Coralville businessman, Leland J. Belding II, returned to his creator on March 3, 2005.

He was born Dec. 26, 1937, in Annapolis, Md., to Dr. Leland J. Belding, Lt. U.S. Navy, and Cosette Campbell.

Leland was a graduate of Storm Lake High School and the University of Iowa. For enjoyment he attended Kirkwood Community College Culinary Arts program. Leland was a soldier of the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959.

Leland married Carol Slach of West Branch in 1965 and was blessed with one son, Leland.

Leland spent his business life in the hospitality industry managing Iowa City's landmarks The Airliner in the early 1960s and later managed the infamous Lil' Bill's Bar. He coached gymnastics and continued to work in the hospitality business until 1983 when he and his wife opened Charlie's Bar & Grill located in Coralville.
