Vernon's childhood years were spent on a farm in northwest Missouri. His education progressed through Savannah High School, the University of Missouri, University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University. Lt. Col. U.S. army retired, Vernon had served in the Pacific. He was drafted in Albuquerque in 1942. After much intense training, the 1487th Engineering Maintenance Company was shipped across the Pacific Ocean to the Phillippine Islands for six months. The United States was getting ready to invade Japan when Japan collasped after the dropping of the atomic bomb; therefore Vernon went to Japan for occupation duty (six months) and then was shipped home in April of 1946. Vernon was employed by the government in the field of Electronic Engineering at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. He and his wife, Mary Jane, were the parents of a son, Terry, and a daughter, Sharon. Upon retirement he operated a pecan farm on his acreage at Las Cruces.
