He died of heart failure at Providence St. Vincent Medical Hospital at age 89 while recovering from a hip fracture.

His parents were Reuben E. and Cora A. Scoles.

He graduated from Neoga Township High School in 1938, served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from October 1940 to March 1941, and worked for Colorado Fuel and Iron in Pueblo, CO from July 1941 to January 1942. He married Willodean V. Watts in January 1942 before enlisting in the U.S. Army to serve as a radio operator during World War II. He worked for a short time at Jantzen Knitting Mills in Portland before starting a career with the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired in 1976.

One of his greatest enjoyments was writing poetry. This lifelong hobby led to publishing his first book, "Dust of the Journey," in 2000 and completing the manuscripts for a second book of inspirational poetry planned for publication this year.

He was predeceased by his five siblings.
