s/o Jonathan Archer

Oliver Hazard Perry Archer, named after the famed naval hero of the War of 1812 (a close friend of his father, Jonathan Archer) rose to become one of the legendary railroad barons of America's golden age. Building a series of baggage companies through acquisition, he successfully secured contracts with the Hudson River Railroad and the Erie Railroad making him a very wealthy man. Erie President Jay Gould hired him to be First Vice President of the railroad and when Gould was ousted due to a scandal and subsequent litigation, Archer moved into his slot.

Mr. Archer married his wife Mary Dean in 1845. The family lived at 14 West 52nd Street and in 1871 purchased 3 East 52nd Street where they maintained their stable. They also had a summer home in Allendale, New Jersey where the Archer Memorial Church which he built in memory of his father is still in existence.
