Jane's parents were Jesse Waddell and Mary Gentry Waddell.

Jane first married Sgt. Thomas Dillard Speight in Haralson County, Georgia. They had a daughter named Martha Thomas Speight Davis. Thomas was killed during the Civil War at the Battle of Knoxville. After Thomas's death, Jane then married Ezekiel "Zeke" Shaddrix and moved to Blount County, Alabama, sometime between 1878 and 1880. Jane and Zeke had three children: Isaac Marion Shaddrix, Jesse R. (or Jesse Thomas) Shaddrix, and Sarah Ann Shaddrix.
