Mexican War US General, Oregon Governor, US Congressman and Senator. He was elected to the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1822 and was member of the State Senate, 1844 to 1846. During the Mexican War, he led a brigade in several battles and was brevetted Major General in 1847. In 1849, he appointed by President James Polk the first Governor of the Territory of Oregon, serving until 1850. He was elected as a Delegate from the Territory to the Thirty-second and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving 1851 to 1859. Upon the admission of Oregon as a State into the Union in 1859, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate serving until 1861.
