Mrs. Margaret Jane Bell Ellis, 101, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Bayview Nursing Home in New Bern. She would have been 102 on March 2.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Broad Street Christian Church, with the Rev. Roger Bennett officiating. The family will receive friends immediately afterward, in the church fellowship hall.

Margaret was born in Washington, Beaufort Co., NC, March 2, 1906, to John Teackle Bell (1848-1930) and Ida Josephine Lilly (1868-1958), who married in Bath, Beaufort Co., NC, Oct 5, 1884.

She married Paul Butler Ellis, son of Elizabeth Butler and William Oliver Ellis, on Sept. 22, 1927, in Washington, Beaufort Co., NC. They moved to New Bern in 1936. Paul called her "Bill" and referred to her as "my sweetheart" and "my bride" up until his death in 1989.

Mrs. Ellis is survived by her son, Paul B. Ellis Jr., of New Bern; her daughter, Jane Ellis Willis, of New Bern; her granddaughter, Lee Willis Johnson, and husband, Charles, of Brunswick, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by an adopted son, John Wingard Ellis.

Margaret was very proud of her genealogy and was a member of the Americans of Royal Descent, the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the Plantagenet Society, the National Society of Magna Carter Dames, and the Jamestown Society.

Since 1936, she was a very active member of Broad Street Christian Church, until declining health made it difficult for her to attend.
