Benjamin served as a Private, Company A, 1st Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 1st Delaware on September 5, 1861 for a 3 year term. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being 27 years old, employed as a Sash Maker, and residing in Wilmington, Delaware.

Benjamin was "Killed In Action" in the Battle of Antietam during the war.
