My Uncle Phil was a medic during WWII, and he served at the Battle of the Bulge. For a brief time, he was listed as MIA, which drove my family crazy, but he was accounted for in a few days. He was a Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient. My memory of him is that he was always smiling and laughing, usually telling jokes. He was a total character with a huge personality, always loving and caring. In his civilian life he became a drug salesman for the pharmaceutical industry.

He and my Mom, Phil's sister, were very close all their lives, and especially in their later years. His family lived about an hour north of us, and Mom would visit them quite frequently. I would go with her occasionally, but not all that much. Of course, now I'm kicking myself for not going more often. I miss Uncle Phil so much and would give anything to hear one of his jokes again, delivered with spot-on timing.
