Joan Patricia White
August 18, 1931 - July 23, 2010

Palm Bay, Brevard Co,Florida

Joan Patricia Fink White (78) died peacefully in her sleep at a Melbourne, Florida hospital on July 23rd, 2010.

She was born August 18, 1931 in Graettinger, Iowa to Harry and Edna Fink, the seventh child of eight. She spent her childhood in Graettinger and after graduating from high school attended the University of Iowa at Ames where she majored in Journalism.

After two years of college, she moved to Boston to help her older sister who was ill and got a job with RCA, and while at this endeavor she met Richard F. White. They moved to Colorado and were married on April 25, 1953.

They settled in Arvada, a suburb of Denver, and there Joan gave birth and together they raised ten children.

She would be not only a mother and wife, but was active in Denver politics, working on both John F. Kennedy's campaign as well as Robert F. Kennedy's. She was also the campaign manger for Tony Vollack who ran for Colorado governor.

In the mid 1960's she took a job writing an op-ed weekly piece for the Arvada Citizen which paid $5.00 a week. She was also active in local politics, a high school kids book group and was an avid seamstress and chef; known throughout her neighborhood for her cinnamon rolls.

In the mid 1970's the family moved to Southern California where Joan became an avid gardener and gained a love for the ocean. She and Richard moved from Southern California to Mexico in 1983, residing in Bucerias where her lifelong love of books inspired her to start the first library there.

Due to sudden medical concerns in regard to Richard, they left Mexico and took up residence in Palm Bay Florida where Joan was an active member in her community and a member of the local book group.

Joan will be remembered not only for her love of family, open mind and heart, her friends and reading but also for a deep love of music; seldom was she not listening to something, even while gardening.

Her smile and laugh will be missed by all those whose life she touched.

Joan was survived by her spouse of 57 years, Richard F. White (Melbourne, Fl, died later in 2010); and her 10 children: Michelle M. Bittner, married to Don Bittner (Escondido, Ca), Barbra E. White, partner Kent Ridl (Arvada, Co), Susun M. White, married to Gregory Brown, (Paia, Hi), Richard F.M. White III, married to Darlene Ann Phillips White (Santee, Ca), Sean D. White, engaged to Kate Darling (Carlsbad, Ca), Marianne White Orkin, married to Arthur Orkin (Aurora, Co), and Patricia J. White (Denver, Co). Shannon R. White Henry, married to Gregory Henry (Hillsboro, Or), Thomas E. St. Thomas, married to Jill Alikas St. Thomas (Madras, New Mexico), Patrick R. Mangold-White, married to Lisa Mangold-White (Denver, Co).

She was survived by her fifteen grandchildren, Terese Faye Bittner, Porsha Rae Ridl, Danirose Ridl, Sophie Marie Ridl, Soleil Mikhail Brown, Gaia Golden Brown, Jhase David White, Tahlia Marie Orkin, Benjamin Joseph Orkin, Samuel Michael Orkin, Elizabeth Rose Henry, Shannon Rose Henry Jr., Alexander William Aaron Henry, Elektra Belle St. Thomas and Zoe Elise Mangold-White, and three great –grandchildren, Zachary Silence, Brayden Ridl and Jaxson Carl Bittner as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
