T. M. Pullen Is Dead; Funeral Will be Today
T. M. Pullen, 72, a Spanish-American war veteran and a pioneer of Estherville, died at midnight Tuesday night [May 21, 1929]. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon in the Presbyterian church, the Rev. P. A. Davies in charge. Odd Fellows and Spanish American war veterans will attend in groups.
Mr. Pullen died after being ill some time. He had been confined in a local hospital since Feb. 27.
T. M. Pullen was born Nov. 13, 1856. While a small child he came to Estherville vicinity, where he has since lived. His wife preceded him in death in 1923.
He is survived by 3 sons, Gilbert of Des Moines, Joseph of Estherville, who was recently called here from a teaching position in Porto Rico, and George of Estherville. Two sisters, Mrs. H. E. The community was shocked this morning when the news of the death of Thomas M. Pullen was told on the streets. Mr. Pullen had been in the Coleman Hospital for sometime past afflicted with heart trouble. For a time visitors were not allowed. Of late, some have had the privilege of visiting Mr. Pullen. It had been thought that he was improving at this time. He had a relapse yesterday and passed away at ten minutes to twelve last night.
Tom Pullen, as everyone in this city knew him, was beloved by all who knew him. Among the school children and boy scouts, the "Tom" was always held in the highest esteem.
Thomas M. Pullen was born near Sparta, Wis., on November 14, 1856. He lived there with his parents until about thirteen years of age and came with them to the Iowa wilderness and Emmet County in 1869. The family resided on a farm just southwest of this city. Later Mr. Pullen farmed there and in later years moved to this city.
He was united in marriage to Maria Gilbertson of this city in 1901. To this union there were four children born. One died in infancy. There are three remaining sons, Gilbert, Joseph and George. His wife passed away in 1913. Since her death Mr. Pullen has had but one ambition and that, to live until he reared his three boys. This he has accomplished to his satisfaction.
Mr. Pullen was a member of the Veterans of the Spanish American War and of the I.O.O.P. He was also assistant leader of the Boy Scouts when that organization was functioning in this city.
