In 1860, he was a farmer in Wise County, Texas, where he lived with his first wife, Martha A. Dean (1840-1866). He and Martha had at least four children: twins Franklin and Charles, Mary, and Adaline. Martha died in 1866.
Hugh married Frances Pamela Grider in 1868 and they had twelve childen: Anna, Martha, Jennie Belle, Emily, Mattie, James, Cora, Lee, Jessie, Hugh, John Roy and Homer Willard.
By 1900, Hugh had moved his family to Lexington, Oklahoma and was a "police judge." He headed up a household consisting of his wife, four of his sons, two of his married daughters, and three grandchildren. After his wife died, he moved to Francis, Harmon County, Oklahoma to live with his daughter Mary Thompson and her husband.
Hugh died February 12, 1913, and was buried in the Lexington Cemetery, in Lexington, Oklahoma (Cleveland County).
