Oscar W. McConkie, 78, prominent church and civic leader, died Saturday in Salt Lake City after a long illness.
Mr. McConkie served as Third District Court judge for 12 years from 1926 to Nov. 15, 1940, when he resigned this post to become a Salt Lake City commissioner. He succeeded William Murdoch, commissioner of public affairs and finance, who died in office. He was commissioner for three years.

Born May 9, 1887 in Moab to George W. and Emma Sommerville McConkie, he married Vivian Redd Oct. 13, 1913, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Survivors include his widow; four sons and one daughter, Bruce R., State Senator Oscar W., Jr., Salt Lake City; F. Briton, William Robert, Bountiful; Mrs. Bill Jordan (Margaret M.) Pope, Provo; 36 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Dalton, Moab; Mrs. Etta Oderkirk, Mrs. Mary Farnsworth, Mrs. Ida Wilson, Salt Lake city.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 12:15 p..m. in the Twentieth LDS Ward chapel, 2nd Ave, and G St. Friends Call 260 E. South Temple Monday 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
