Passed on in Santa Fe on January 17, 1999. Since moving to Santa Fe in 1978 he has been a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, the Council on International Relations, and the New Mexico Historical Society. He was a long time member of Rotary Club of Las Vegas, New Mexico, and was active in civic affairs. He was the former owner of Phillips Travel Service in Las Vegas.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Jodie) Avery Phillips, of Santa Fe; one daughter, Georgia Snead and husband James, of Santa Fe; one son, RADM (Ret.) Robert A. Phillips and wife Helen Ann, of Arlington, VA; grandchildren: James Elliott Snead and wife Monica, of Dallas, TX, Bryan Phillips of Arlington, VA, Gregory Snead and wife Laura, of Puyallup, WA, and two great-granddaughters: Emily and Molly Snead of Puyallup; one sister, Grace Martin of Big Spring, TX; two brothers: Rodney, of Albuquerque and Ross, of Santa Fe.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no memorial service. Cremation has taken place.
