First settled minister in Gloucester. Died in the 58th year of his ministry. He was a Harvard graduate, married three times with 11 children, all by his first wife. He came to Gloucester in 1702, leaving his position of chaplain at Fort Saco, Maine to come to Cape Ann. During his ministry, the town separated into four parishes. His home, the White-Ellery house, built in 1710, still stands in Gloucester and is a museum. It is one of only a few First Period buildings still extant in Massachusetts.
