OTTAWA -- Don V. Campbell, 79, Ottawa, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at an Overland Park hospital.
Mr. Campbell served in various positions in civil service for the Veterans Administration for 31 years before he retired in 1975 as director of the regional office in Lincoln, Neb. He served in the Naval Reserve during World War II and retired at the rank of lieutenantcolonel.
He was born June 2, 1919, in Harris, Mo., the son of Willis Roy Campbell and Rose Ellen Batson. He grew up in Ottawa and was graduated from Ottawa High School in 1937. He earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science at Ottawa University in 1941. He later did graduate work at Northwestern University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Chicago, and the University of Kansas. He had lived in many cities and states before he moved back to Ottawa in 1975. Mr. Campbell was a member of First United Methodist Church at Ottawa, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge No. 803, Masonic Lodge No. 18 AF&AM in Ottawa, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the American Association of Retied People. He was married to Jean Marie Hart on Dec. 24, 1943, at Seattle. She died July 17, 1998. Survivors include two sons, Don Campbell Jr., Lancaster, Texas, and Philip H. Campbell, Lufkin, Texas; two brothers, George Willis Campbell, Topeka, and Dr. Jene Dale Campbell, San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Lady Phyllis Showalter, McLean, Va.; and four grandchildren. Mr. Campbell was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Dengel and Son Mortuary in Ottawa. Inurnment will be at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa and sent in care of the mortuary.
