Samuel B. La Force was reared & educated in Pike County, MO. He removed to Jasper County in 1843, locating near Carthage. He entered & bought large tracts of land, & managed a farm. In war times he was an ardent Unionist, & served as a guide for General Sigel before & during the battle of Carthage, 7/5/1861. Later he served in an Illinois regiment, & 2 of his sons also performed military service. In 1846 & again in 1848 he was elected to sheriff of Jasper County. In 1850 he was elected to the Sixteenth General Assembly, & in 1866 he was elected clerk of the circuit & county courts. He died in 1899.
