Born August 21, 1931 in Brockwell, AR she was the daughter of Oscar Elbert and Sudie Jane (Morgan) Melton. In March 1949 she was married to Glenn Ray Hughes who preceded her in death in September 1982. On March 9, 1983 she was married to Vernon Louis Howell who survives.
Also surviving are two step-sons, James Howell of Excelsior Springs, MO and Dennis Howell of Merriam, KS; one brother, Gerald Melton of Lawson, MO; two grandchildren, Gina Reuscher of Kansas City, MO and Matthew McKinney of Surprise, AZ; two step-grandchildren, Janelle Howard and Wesley Howell both of Kansas City, MO; a special adopted granddaughter, Tonya Blackmon of Grannis, AR; daughter-in-law, Mary Hughes of Higginsville, MO and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Douglas Hughes in 1993 and David Hughes in 2009; two brothers, Virgil Melton and Orgal Melton; two sisters, Lois Banning and Willeen Wyatt and a grandson, Jeffrey Hughes in 1975.
Mrs. Howell was raised in Arkansas where she attended public schools. At the age of 16 she moved to Missouri. Following her marriage she worked at various employments and after moving to Excelsior Springs was employed as manager of the Monterey Motel, night manager at Colony Plaza in the mid 1970's and later as manager of John's Car Wash from where she retired in 1983.
Eva was a member of the Church of Christ in Excelsior Springs and a life-member of the VFW #5606 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed collecting dolls and at one time had over 200 dolls in her collection. She also enjoyed the Mill Inn Coffee Club and taking care of her animals. Following the death of her son, she started the Douglas Hughes Wrestling Scholarship at Excelsior Springs High School.
Funeral services will be Wednesday July 28, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, MO. Visitation one hour prior to the services. Burial in Old Union Cemetery near Lawson, MO. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Midwest Transplant Network.
