Edna Spurgeon, 75, wife of William Spurgeon of Route 1, Berne, died at 6:55 p.m. Thursday at Swiss Village. Death followed an illness of 2 ½ years and she had been bedfast the past year. Death is attributed to cancer. She had been in the nursing care unit of Swiss Village since last May.
A lifetime resident of this community, Mrs. Spurgeon was born in Monroe Township April 24, 1902, the daughter of William and Adeline Stauffer Nussbaum. She married William Spurgeon in Berne April 29, 1933. Mr. Spurgeon was a school teacher in the local system for many years.
Surviving are the husband; three sons, William Spurgeon, Jr., at home; Dr. Charles H. Spurgeon, Indianapolis and John E. Spurgeon, Houston, Texas; three grandchildren; two brothers, Clifton Nussbaum, Berne and Howard David Nussbaum, Route 1, Berne and two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Florence) Fruechtenicht, Fort Wayne and Mrs. John (Martha) Hindenlang, Decatur.
Mrs. Spurgeon was a member of the First Mennonite Church and widely known throughout the community.
The body is at the Yager Funeral Home where services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Rev. Carl A. Classen and Rev. Vernon J. Sprunger officiating. Burial will be in the M.R.E Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of the service.
