Purnell served as a Private with the 3rd Delaware Infantry, Company B during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 3rd Delaware Infantry of February 11, 1862 in Dagsboro, Delaware for a 3 year term. He was noted as being 33 years old, 5' - 9" tall, ruddy complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, and a farmer by trade.

Purnell "Died Of Disease" in the hospital in Harper's Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) during the war.
