David served as a Private with the 1st Delaware Infantry, Company E during the Civil War.

David was wounded in the shoulder at the battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg September 17th 1862.

On December 28, 1862, Private Johnson was attached to U.S. General Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware as a guard of the hospital.

He "Died Of Disease" (Pneumonia) which developed while he was serving as a Guard.

He was interred in the Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery at 10 a.m. on February 21, 1863.
