Actor. Born in New York City, he was a performer and playwright, who become one of the most popular minstrel show entertainers of 19th Century. He gained notoriety in the 1830s, for his role as the black slave Jim Crow character, using African American vernacular speech, song and dance. During the years of his peak popularity, he became an International entertainer, performing for sold out play houses and theatres world wide with audiences demanding numerous encores. By 1840, Rice suffered from a type of paralysis which limited his speech and movements, resulting in his death at age 52.
