Recipient of Military Cross (posthumous)

The Royal Dragoon Guards
British Army

He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Cpl Stenton, commanding a Viking armoured vehicle, and LCpl Stephen Monkhouse were killed by small arms fire during a cordon operation as they tried to evacuate a wounded colleague in Basharan, Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province.

Aged 23, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire. After leaving high school, Cpl Stenton attended the Army Training Regiment in Harrogate and completed Phase 2 training in May 2004. He previously served on exercise in Canada, two tours of duty in Iraq, and passed the Challenger 2 MBT Crew Commanders' course before deploying to Afghanistan as a Viking Commander. "Matty" was described by a senior officer as an uncomplicated man and the kindest of friends; he was also a hard, tenacious soldier who always fought for what he believed in. He died a few days short of his 24th birthday. He will also be remembered for his sporting prowess, especially swimming, and his love of radio-controlled model helicopters and cars.

Cpl Stenton leaves behind his father Michael and stepmother Gillian, sister Charlotte, mother Jeannette, grandparents Elizabeth and Anthony Powell, along with other relatives and friends. His family paid the following tribute: "A loving son, brother and grandson who will be dearly missed. Matthew always took life in his stride and never lost sight of the important things in life his family and friends. Matthew died how he lived his life, surrounded by his friends. We are so proud of Matthew and it comes as no surprise to us to hear that he died whilst trying to help one of his fellow comrades. You will always be in our hearts and minds, love you always."

Funeral with full military honours was held on August 24, 2010 at the Catterick Garrison Memorial Church.

In March 2011, Cpl Stenton was posthumously awarded the Military Cross for his acts of bravery during combat operations.
