Little is known of Richard Wright's origins. No birth record has been found. Other sources have been used to calculate his birth. The only reference to his parents is by noted historian, William T. Davis of Plymouth who had access to local "gossip" and oral family history.

He claims that Richard Wright was the son of William Wright & Priscilla Carpenter. ["Genealogical Register of Plymouth Families" by William T. Davis, Appendix, page 354 "WRIGHT... WILLIAM, in the text, came in the Fortune 1621. He m. Priscilla, d. of Alexander Carpenter, and had a son Richard."]

Richard was married on 21 Nov 1644 at Plymouth, Massachusetts to Hester Cooke.

They had at least 6 children:
. Adam Wright (1645 - 1724)
+ sp: Sarah Soule
+ sp: Mehitable Barrow
. Esther Wright (1652 - 1717)
+ sp: Ephraim Tinkham
. Isaac Wright (1652 - 1676)
. John Wright (1656 - 1675)
. Mary Wright (1657)
+ sp: Hugh Price
. Samuel Wright (1661 - 1679)

In the article on William Wright and Priscilla Carpenter, "New England, The Great Migration & The Great Migration Begins" (Ancestry.com), it states that there were no recorded children of William and Priscilla. William came to America aboard the Fortune alone in 1621 (re/ Passenger List of the Fortune) and married Priscilla sometime after that. Also, since there were no settlements in Massachusetts in 1608, Richard was most probably born in England. He also is not the same Richard Wright that was designated "of Braintree, Massachusetts" as that Richard, who came in 1630 in the Winthrop Fleet was accompanied by a wife, Martha, and a child, Eleanor.

Richard's death was recorded as June 9, 1691 age 83 years and 2 hours. Making his birthdate June 9, 1608. His will was written and signed by him on June 8, 1691.
[6 Oct 2014 from Shelly Ketchum]

It appears that the only source of information for his birth was when he died on 9 Jun 1691 "about two hours after being about 83 yeares old"... so it seems that the time of day that he was born was also known... ABOUT 83 years after his birth. Andthis information was supplied by someone who was present at his birth? 83 years earlier?
