One of nine children of Mary and John Finnell. His siblings included: Robert Marshall, Elizabeth Gertrude, William Henry, Anna Elizabeth, Walter Scott, James Edward, Frank Pearson, and Laura Bell. He married Annie Ireland on November 6, 1876 in Saline County, Missouri. In 1880, they were living in Grand Pass, Saline County, Missouri, where John was farming. He and Annie had two children at that point, Pearl Gertrude and Everett. By 1900, they were living in Washington, Lafayette County, Missouri, still farming, and had added 6 more children to the family: Frances Dov, Aubrey Lawrence, Anna Joy, Grace Darling, and Leland P. By 1910, John and Annie had moved to Oklahoma and were living in Oklahoma City where John was working as a carpenter. Their 18 year old daughter Grace Darling was living with them. By 1920, John and Annie had moved to Dallas and John was working as a house carpenter. By 1928, they had moved back to Oklahoma City where John died.
