Frederick Danielson/Donaldson was the son of Altamont Danielson/Donaldson, Sr. and Anna Richards and the husband of Sophia Eckheart. At age one he moved with his family from Brimfield, MA, to Butternuts, Otsego, NY. About 1818 he emigrated from New York to Ontario, Canada, with his brothers Altamont, Jr. and H. W. R. (Hezekiah Willard Richard), and stayed in Canada twenty years. In the 1830's along with his brothers and cousins he changed his name from 'Danielson' to 'Donaldson.' Frederick's immediate family (wife and sons) kept the 'Donaldson' name for the 1850 Census-MI-Wayne-Detroit. However, soon after 1850 they reverted to the earlier 'Danielson' form of their name and the children also used the "Danielson" surname.
Soon after Frederick's death his six sons left home. The sons did not have a reunion together until over 50 years later as recorded in this Duluth (MN) Evening Herald story from 1907:
"Six Brothers, all Pioneers in Different Cities, Held Reunion - During the latter part of April a most unique reunion of 6 brothers took place at the home of one of their number, William C. Danielson, near Detroit. Among the six brothers was one of the eldest of Duluth pioneers, George W. Danielson, who has just returned to this city from Detroit, where he visited for some weeks after the reunion. Leaving some fifty-five years ago and never having had a reunion ...is the experience of these brothers and instead of the strapping young men who left home over a half a century ago there were six whose red hair and beards have been touched by the frost of many winters. Their step is not as active as it was when they left ...Hartland, Mich. but all of them are well preserved and they laugh at Father Time and predict that they will have many more reunions. The six brothers of the Danielson family have had many experiences since they separated and during their ...stay at Windsor when the reunion was held they told each other what had befallen them since they had bid goodbye to the mother and other members of the family. And it is no wonder that the brothers wandered from home, looking for fame and fortune. Away back in 1837 the father, Frederick Danielson, was a friend of William Lyon MacKenzie (1795-1861), who was the leader of the Patriot war in Canada (a short-lived rebellion by Canadians against the British rulers of Canada), and with McKenzie he escaped from Canada after it was found that the cause was hopeless. Even now the boys laud the acts of the father in standing up for what he deemed his rights, and to listen to their stories of what they have done through life gives the listener an idea that they have always maintained their independence....Phillip B. Danielson, pioneer from Fremont, Neb. had the honor of erecting the first house in Cheyenne, Wyo. He has been an Indian fighter and a rancher...Charles W. Danielson, the eldest brother, who resides at Pigeon, Mich. has followed peaceful pursuits as a farmer..."
Note: One source says Frederick was the son of Calvin, rather than Altamont, Danielson. This has been disproved, however. Brimfield vital records show that Calvin had a son Chester in 1797. That same year, 1797, his brother Altamont and his wife had a son, Frederick (memorialized here), in Butternuts, NY.
