Joseph was the first of the name Souther to be found in Hingham records and those who have since resided in Hingham and its vicinity bearing the name are his decendants, many of whom continued to follow his business of a shipwright until that business was abandoned.

"Joseph Souter was married to Content Tower daughter of Ibrook Tower of Hingham: on the 22nd day of April 1708 by Mr. John Norton pastor of the church of Hingham."

His family resided in a home that he built around 1708 on King Street, in Hingham (2nd Precinct) facing (in 1909) what was then Pond Street. Note: The 2nd Precinct of Hingham where his children were all born, would later become part of Cohasset.

No tombstone has been found.
