The youngest child of John William Roberts, Sr. and Anna Cory, "Dick" lived in Calhoun County as a young boy. His father, John, died in 1901.

In 1905, Dick's mother married Peter A. Dagne. Dick then lived in St. Louis, Missouri with his mother, step-father and half-brother, Llewellyn Dagne.

His step-father was a tinner in a tinware factory. He died in 1918.

By 1920, Dick lived in Wray, Yuma County, Colorado with his mother and half-brother. Dick supported the family by working as a core maker in a foundry.

He served in the United States Army during World War I. He was a private with the Colorado 107th Base Hospital.

Dick married Pearl Gladys Ames around 1920. They lived in St. Louis, as did Dick's mother. She died there in 1922.

Dick and his wife were the parents of 2 children. The family remained in St. Louis for a number of years, and he worked as a mechanic for an automobile company.

They moved to Crawford County, Missouri in the early 1930's and then to Lincoln County, Missouri by 1940. At that time, he worked as a carpenter.

At the time of his death in Springfield, Missouri, Dick was 69 years, 6 months and 21 days old.

Pearl died in 1990 and was buried in Wray, Colorado.
