Ruth I. Gordon, 96, died from complications of heart disease March 23, 2010, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. A memorial service was at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St.

Ruth was born Aug. 12, 1913, in Pennsylvania. She met her husband Harry (known as Whitey) at Stetson University in Deland, Fla., where she majored in drama and education. The two enjoyed many happy years together until "Whitey" passed away in Hawaii in 1977. Ruth and her family moved to Anchorage in 1953, when Fourth Avenue was the only paved street. She worked many years in the Anchorage School District as an English teacher, as well as a counselor, mainly at Central Junior High School and Clark Junior High School. Retiring in 1976, she spent the next 20 years living in the Waikiki area of Honolulu. Her family likes to remember how happy she was during those years -- entertaining family, spending time at the beach and socializing with her numerous friends. She returned to Anchorage in 1996. Belonging to many organizations over her long life, she was always proud to be a Pi Beta Phi member, along with her many activities. Ruth was very creative artistically. In her earlier years, she played cello and piano. Her radiant, warm personality drew people to her over her lifetime. She was, above all, a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all of them.

She leaves behind her daughter, Pat Ryan; and her son-in-law, Mark, of Anchorage; her son, Mike Gordon; and her daughter-in-law, Shelli, of Anchorage; her granddaughters, Teri Shumake of Olive Branch, Miss., Michele Ritter of Alamagordo, N.M., and Rose Lafferty of Anchorage, and their families; and her grandson, Michael Gordon of Bellingham, Wash., and his family. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148. Ruth was a lifelong Catholic. Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Visit the online memorial at legacy.com

Ruth was the only child of Michael Boisch (1888-1978) and his first wife, Sarah Jane "Sadie" Snair (1891-1919).
