Albert Pfeifer joined the Marine Corps in late 1938. After completing boot camp at Parris Island, he was selected for the Corps' Field Music school, and graduated with the rank Field Music on May 26, 1939. He was transferred to the Marine Base at Washington DC, and was assigned to Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines. In August 1940, Pfeifer traveled to San Juan to join the Marine detachment at the Naval Air Station.

By 1944, Pfeifer was rated as Field Music Corporal. He was assigned to the Headquarters Company of First Battalion, 24th Marines, as the senior musician. Pfiefer served through the battles of Saipan and Tinian, and left the battalion in the fall of 1944.

Albert Pfeifer stayed with the Marine Corps; he retired in 1969. His thirty year career included service in Korea and Vietnam, and saw him attain the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant. Pfeifer retired to Greenville, North Carolina, where he died in 2004.
