Attended the School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts) (1900-03) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1903-06), both in Philadelphia. In 1920, he collaborated with photographer Paul Strand on the short film Manhatta. Condé Nast Staff Photographer (1926-29). Norman Wait Harris Prize, 1945.
He married Katharine Shaffer in 1921; in 1933 she died of cancer.
He married Musya Metas Sokolova in 1939.
