Thomas served as a Private, Company K, 1st Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 1st Delaware on September 16, 1861 in Wilmington, Delaware for a 3 year term. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being 21 years old, light complexion, light hair, 5' 8", a sailor by trade, and residing in New Castle County, Delaware.

Thomas was "Killed In Action" at Marye's Heights during the battle of Fredericksburg during the war.
