Harriet was a daughter of Susan Cook Berlin and George Neely Berlin. She was also wife to Harmon Phipps and raised, as their only child, Alice Stover, who inherited their home (the Phipps homestead) and posessions. They were loving, doting and generous to Alice. The Phipps' loved children and although they had none of their own, through their raising of Alice were surrounded by children when she married and began a large family. Because Alice was a photographer, many photos of "Aunt Hat" are in existence. Still more are yet to be discovered from glass plate negatives that are spread out among different family members.
