Roehl was born in Weiser on 5 July 1921 to George and Crisee Wardrip. He was the youngest of five children. Due to breast cancer that had spread through her body, Crisee died less than 24 hours after Roehl was born.
His father had the responsibility of managing the family farm and continuing to raise the other four children without their mother, so when he was just three days old, John was placed in the care of a close family friend, Joseph and Amy Roehl, also of Weiser.
He was raised on the Roehl farm and spent a lot of time with his brother Milford, and three sisters, Mary, Bernadine (Deane), and Ruth. He attended Eastside Elementary School in town.
In 1934, the Roehls moved to the country south of Weiser. There he attended 7th and 8th grade at Sunnyside School. He rode the bus into town to attend Weiser High School. He graduated with the class of 1940. He was later adopted by the Roehls in 1942 and farmed in Weiser for 12 years.
In 1948 he married Unice Storholt of Clarkston, Washington. His son, Gary, was born in 1949. In 1952 Roehl moved his family to Murtaugh. During the summers he worked on farms and in the winters he worked in the potatoes.
In 1954, his daughter, Patricia was born. In June 1955, his wife died in an auto accident. She was just 28 years old.
In 1956 he began working for Young's Dairy in Twin Falls and worked there for four years. In 1957 he married Frances Gilman of Twin Falls. He adopted Frances' infant daughter, Claudia Debbey. In 1958, a son, John Alan was born and in 1963 a son, Hugh Chad was born. In 1964, his youngest child, Stacey Renee was born.
During the years of 1959-1978, he and Frances owned their own janitorial business in Twin Falls. The family worked hard. Due to health concerns, he sold this business. From 1978-1983, he worked for the Neil Ambrose Hog farm in Wendell. In June 1983, he and Frances moved to Salmon. Frances died in July of liver cancer, at the age of 48. Roehl retired in 1990. He has been involved in the Hospice Program for six years. In 1997, he was elected as the president of the senior citizen's program and served for seven years. He resigned in 2004 but continued to enjoy the program and socializing with the people there. He loved fishing. In 1990 he became acquainted with Jesse Hunter. They enjoyed each other's company and going fishing together. In 2003, he met Ada Drollinger. They enjoyed each other's company and fishing. They caught 'em and she cooked 'em.
Between the years 1987 to 2005 he enjoyed attending his high school class reunions in Weiser and visiting with former classmates.
Roehl is survived by his sons, Gary Roehl and Hugh Chad Roehl; daughter, Patty Flores and their families. He has 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Milford Wardrip; three sisters, Mary Owens, Bernadine (Deane) Randall, and Ruth Hogans; two wives, Unice and Frances; and three children, Debbey Brown, John Alan Roehl and Stacey Brown.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Jones & Casey Funeral Home of Salmon.
