Served in the 46th Missouri Infantry in the Civil War. Married three times. He and his first wife had at least six children: Sarah E., Margaret A., Amy S., Mary Alice, Solomon, and Enoch Campbell. John and his second wife had at least nine more children. He and his third wife had three more children.

In 1880, he and his first wife and their children were renting a farm in Precinct 6, Texas (Lampasas County). The household included: John Cox, age 34, born in Missouri, Mary, age 34, born in Tennessee; Margarette, age 11, born in Missouri: Amy, age 7, born in Oregon; Alice, age 4, born in Missouri; and Solomon, age 1, born in Texas.
