William George Lewcock, victim of an explosion at the gunpowder mills, situated about a mile to the north-east of his grave. I arrived more in hope than expectation as there was no indication that William's grave was at Hanworth. Yet I was surprised, not only to find it, but to find that it was in good condition - someone has had a foundation fitted.

The mill was in use between 1766 and 1927. Owners included Edmund Hill, John Butts, Harvey and Grueber and then Curtis and Harvey. Local roads bear the names of Curtis and Harvey. Despite quite stringent safety precautions there were more than fifty explosions during the life of the mill.
