Hendrix, Evelyn Combs On March 2, 2009, Evelyn was called into the arms of the Lord and reunited with her devoted husband of seventy years, Merrell. She was born on May 10, 1914, to Will and Ethel Combs and lived her entire life in Dallas, Tx. Evelyn attended Forest Avenue High school and graduated Valedictorian in 1931. She received a B.S. Degree in Education from SMU in 1934 and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She taught high school two years in Garland, Tx. Evelyn and Merrell C. Hendrix embarked on a life together August 1, 1936. Evelyn started her career with the Federal Government at Home Owner's Loan and ended it with retirement at the IRS in 1972. She and Merrell became member's of Lakewood United Methodist Church and served faithfully until their deaths. She held numerous positions and was the pianist for the Wesley Beacon Sunday School class. The United Lakewood Methodist Church Children's Division is dedicated in honor of Chief and Mrs. Hendrix. Evelyn served as president of the women's auxiliary for the Dallas Fire Department during her husband's service as the Fire Chief of Dallas. They were long time members of Lakewood Country Club and enjoyed many dances and social events at the club. Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Merrell C. Hendrix and infant son, J. Merrell Hendrix; parents, Will and Ethel Combs; sister and brother-in-law, Velma and Scott Duncan; aunts, Audrey and her husband, Bill Rogers and Virginia Morris. Evelyn is survived by her nephew, John W. Hendrix and wife, Kay; cousin, Margaret Ann LaPrade and husband, John; their sons, Kenneth LaPrade and his family and Douglas LaPrade and devoted friend of fifty-nine years, Elizabeth Allen. She was cared for faithfully for many years by Marszella Buchanan, Peggy Carroll, Mary Dodd and Merelene Carroll. A visitation will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, March 5th at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 2443 Abrams Rd., Dallas, Tx. 75214. Funeral Services will be Friday, 10:00 am, March 6, Lakewood United Methodist Church and burial to follow at Grove Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Lakewood United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
