One of six children of Elizabeth Ann "Lizzie" Rowland and Robert Henry Smith, a prominent Missouri family. His father was a judge and a state legislator, elected in 1898 to the Missouri state legislature from the 2nd district. His siblings included: George Rowland (1865-1938); Stephen Nicholas (1868-1930); Hallie Owen (1869-1900), married Flave G. Ingram and had two children, Florence and Ruth; Giles Hawkins Smith (1875-1988); and Martha "Mattie" Smith (1875-). Married Pearl in 1901 and had four children, including: Rowland Maurice Smith; Robert Owen Smith, Jr.; Charles Haskell; and John Lucian Smith. The family lived on Ash Street in Lexington for over 20 years. Robert worked as a rural route mail carrier and Pearl worked as his substitute. His son, John, was a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and appeared on the cover of Life Magazine.

Services for R. O. Smith Sr., 80, retired Lexington mail carrier who died here Sunday following an extended illness will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lexington Baptist Church. Reverend James Wilkerson will conduct. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery. He is survived by three sons, R. O. Junior, Norman; C. H., Tulsa, and Lt Col John Lucian Smith, Quantico, Virginia; one sister, Mrs. George Long, Slater, Missouri, and five grandchildren.
