In 1990, John retired from his medical practice after 38 years. During the course of his distinguished career as an orthopedic surgeon, he founded Triangle Orthopaedic Associates and served as associate clinical professor of orthopaedics at Duke Medical Center, training many young surgeons.
John was tireless in service to medicine as a calling and a profession. He was a delegate from North Carolina to the American Medical Association for 17 years. He chaired the prestigious Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs of the AMA. He also served as chair of the first peer review committee for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where he published the first national criteria for orthopaedic practice. John also served as president of the North Carolina Medical Society and president of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association. On November 10, 2000, John received the distinguished Harris Memorial Award given by the North Carolina Medical Society to honor a North Carolina physician who has given a lifetime of outstanding service in quality healthcare.
John also loved and served his church and his community. He was on the administrative board at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, and he chaired the committee that worked to build the educational building at Duke Memorial. He was also a member of the school board for Durham Public Schools and a lifelong member of the Durham Kiwanis Club. Last week, John was honored with a Hixson Award for his contributions to the irradication of iodine deficiency disorder, the Kiwanis International Worldwide Service Project.
John is survived by his sister, Marjorie Ross, and by his loving wife of 59 years, Ella Eddins Glasson. Their children are Mary Park Brogdon, John Glasson, George Glasson, Joel Glasson, Jean Joklik, and Jenny Hubert. John was predeceased by one grandchild, Maya Caroline Mason, and is survived by ten grandchildren, Matthew Brogdon, Hannah Glasson, Emily Glasson, Josh Glasson, Tim Glasson, Corey Glasson, Marshall Mason, Ruth Mason, Judy Joklik, and Ella Joklik.
His memorial service will be held at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church on Friday, February 9, 2001, at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the worship service.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in John's memory to the Durham Kiwanis Club Foundation, the United Methodist Retirement Home Corp. Benevolent Fund, or Duke Memorial United Methodist Church.
