Virginia Watson, died 4:30 a.m., August 8, 1986, was born February 25, 1914 in Enid, Oklahoma. Her parents were Dr. Edward Lee Watson and Mrs. Jonie Macon Van Treese. Dr. Watson was Pastor of the First Baptist Church. By 1917, Dr. Watson became Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Okmulgee, Oklahoma which was Virginia's home until her marriage. Virginia attended Okmulgee Public Schools and graduated summa cum laude from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1935 with a BFA Degree in Music, having completed her coursework in three years. Resuming her studies in 1962, Virginia was a student of Dr. Lois Hewett, and was awarded her Masters Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Oklahoma in 1966.
Virginia was married to Dr. Paul Clark Gallaher (deceased) of Shawnee in 1936. They had four children: Ms. Martha E. Storm, Dallas, Texas; Mrs. Dan F. (Nancy) Witt, Dallas, Texas; Mrs. Ralph G. (Virginia Lee) Maurer, Gainesville, Florida; and Mr. Paul Clinton Gallaher, Crested Butte, Colorado.
Virginia married Jack H. Abernathy in December, 1974. The Abernathy's have lived in Oklahoma City since their marriage.
An accomplished pianist and teacher of piano, she gave concerts in many cities in Oklahoma and Texas as well as in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. She was organist for the First Baptist Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma and several other area churches as interim organist.
Virginia was an active participant in community, patriotic and social affairs. She held membership in Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of the American Revolution, The Magna Carta Society, The English Speaking Union, The Huguenot Society, The Ladies Music Club, and Sigma Alpha Iota. Virginia was Director of the Oklahoma Symphony Society Board from 1975, and a Director of Southwestern Bank until her death. Virginia has been a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. As a devoted mother and loving wife, Virginia Watson Abernathy's vibrant personality brought joy, interest, and lively energy to each of her endeavors, her family and her friends.
Survivors include her husband, Jack H. Abernathy; her four children (listed above) and two stepchildren, Mrs. Bruce M. (Carri) Bell of Oklahoma City and Jack H. Abernathy, Jr. of Dallas, Texas; and 9 grandchildren.
