OBITUARY

Eitors Ledger - Elizabeth Gift Duncan died April 25th, near Salina. She was born near McConnellsburg, Fulton county, Penn., April 4th, 1833. When a child she moved with her parents to Allegheny county, Md., where she grew to womanhood, and in the fall of 1852 the family came to Jefferson county. She was united in marriage with James B. Duncan May 3d, 1855. Four children were born to them, who, with the husband, a brother and a sister, survive her. Mrs. Duncan was an exemplary woman in every respect. She was reserved in her disposition, never speaking of anyone in harsh terms. She was very much attached to her family and took a deep interest in its welfare, not only temporally but spiritually. She was a kind mother, loving wife, and faithful friend and neighbor. She had been troubled for some time with heart disease, and on Friday before her death was taken suddenly ill. Entertaining no hopes for recovery, her children were sent for immediately. Two sons, Frank and Preston, who reside in Ottumwa, came on the following day and remained with her until she gave evidence of being much better, when they returned home. Harlan, who resides in Lincoln, Neb., did not reach home until about two hours before she died; but her children all enjoyed the privilege of conversing with her shortly before her death. Much consolation is given to her bereaved friends and loved ones in view of the life she lived. She was a christian and always exemplified a christian spirit in all things. She joined the M. E. church in 1856 and has since remained a consistent member. The funeral sermon was preached in the Richwoods church by her pastor, Rev. John H. Taylor of Salina, after which the body was laid to rest in the cemetery just west of the church. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of a host of friends.
