William served as a Corporal, Company D, 1st Delaware Infantry during the Civil War.

He enlisted in the 1st Delaware on August 28, 1861 for a 3 year term. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being 28 years old and residing in Camden, Delaware.

William was "Killed In Action" in the battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg during the war.
